Rower’s Edge begins working with clients at any time from Sophomore to Senior year. We recommend an early start in order to have time to plan for required testing as well as to digest all of the necessary information about colleges and rowing programs to get the best recruiting results.
Rowing is a mainstream sport and college recruiting is highly competitive and can be very stressful. Rowing and coxing alone does not automatically lead to successful college recruiting results. A rower/coxswain must distinguish himself/herself in order to get noticed by college coaches and performance academically and athletically will determine which college coaches will be interested. We understand what colleges are looking for in a student-athlete and provide the guidance necessary to find the best match for our clients. Rower’s Edge has a proven track record and our personal attention and insight helps ease the stress of this daunting process.
Initial Consultation with Parent(s) and Rower/Coxswain:
In order to get the process started, we meet with the rower/coxswain and parent to create a college recruiting plan which outlines expectations and goals commensurate with rower/coxswain’s performance both academically and athletically. This will include:
- Discuss what the rower/coxswain is looking for in the college rowing experience
- Independent evaluation of the recruiting possibilities
- Discuss rowing program options (DI, DII, DIII)
- Develop an initial list of College rowing programs
- Discuss an initial plan for college visits
Continuing Consultation Services – 24/7 during Sophomore, Junior and Senior year

The best results occur when the rower/coxswain starts to investigate and plan for recruiting as soon as the student-athlete knows that he/she wants to row in college. If this happens during Sophomore year, it is a great time to start. However, Junior year is the critical year to take action, communicate with coaches and visit colleges in order to find the best college match for the rower/coxswain. Finally, Senior year can be overwhelming and stressful. It is critically important to be proactive to complete the necessary steps in the college recruiting process. Our ongoing consulting services include:
- Guidance on high school rowing including Summer program options
- Create individual time line for appropriate testing and college visits
- Guidance on particulars of communication with college coaches and college visits including emails, rowing resume, phone calls and face to face discussions.
- Evaluate appropriateness of DI (Ivy League or scholarship schools), DII, or DIII
- Prepare parents and rower for meetings with coaches and feedback after visits
- Aid in narrowing target schools based on client’s academic and athletic achievements
- Guidance with respect to options, timing of official visits and decisions
- Assist in communications during decision time in order to evaluate client’s position
- Guidance on crafting a proper plan for selecting top choice while keeping options open
